Thunder, feel the thunder Lightning then the thunder… When thunder roars, go indoors! The safest place to be during a thunderstorm is indoors and away from windows. You want four walls surrounding you- that means no open garages, porches, covered decks, or picnic shelters. The next best place to be is in a hard-topped vehicle with windows rolled up. If you are caught outside during a thunderstorm, keep moving towards safe shelter. Stay away from isolated trees or other tall objects. You do not want to be the tallest object! If you are in a forest, stay within a lower group of trees. Avoid open fields, hills, boulder fields, rocky outcrops, and ridge tops. Do not lie flat on the ground. Avoid bodies of water and metal objects, which can conduct electricity. Image: A close encounter with a summer lightning storm as it swirls around devilstowernps, Wyoming.
