When the very descriptive park ranger gives you directions to the overlook: Start at the old oak tree near the entrance of the park, where the sunlight filters through the branches in the early morning. Face the tree and take ten steps forward, then turn right and walk towards the sound of the bubbling stream. Follow the stream as it winds its way through the forest, keeping an eye out for the three tall pine trees that stand like sentinels on the left. When you reach the fallen log that bridges the stream, cross over it and continue upstream. As you walk, listen for the chirping of the red cardinal and the rustling of the leaves as the squirrels play in the branches above. Watch out for the bitey ends. Soon, you will come to a clearing with a large boulder at its center, the one like the pioneers used to ride for miles, surrounded by wildflowers in shades of purple and gold.
