September is a good month to spot baby porcupines at @glacierbaynps, often referred to as a porcupettes (yes, for real), trotting behind their parents in search of food or a music manager. You gotta start somewhere. At birth, the porcupettes weigh in at only 1-2 pounds and can be about 10 inches long. They will nurse for more than 3 months, while beginning to eat local vegetation. Maybe they’re born with it. They are. Baby porcupines are born with quills, which actually take several hours to dry before becoming usable as protection. Should you ever offer a baby porcupine a belly rub? No. Just no. Touching a wild thing does not make everything groovy. Good point.
