Remember, most bears just want to be left alone. Don’t we all?
If you see a bear on a hike, maintain a safe and respectful distance of about fifty yards. If you’re unable to safely retreat if a bear approaches, scare it away by shouting loudly and aggressively, or by oversharing about the amount of work you have to get done in the next week. Hey, where ya going?!!?
Wait, aren’t bears hibernating right now? While you often hear about bear’s hibernating during the winter, it’s actually a process called torpor, or a lighter sleep-state. A bear can actually wake up quickly if it senses danger or even exit the den to seek out a snack.
