“How much does a harbor seal weigh? Enough to break the ice!” Harbor seals were recently spotted resting on the frozen* water of the Bartlett Cove Inner Lagoon (*frozen is subjective in this case). In Glacier Bay, harbor seals rely on ice calved from glaciers to give birth to their pups each year. Scientists monitor this annually and the Park makes efforts to protect seal pupping areas. As glaciers continue to shrink and less ice is calved into the Bay, how will seals adapt? As a park founded as a living laboratory, Glacier Bay presents an unprecedented opportunity to study this question. 🎥: Two clips of a harbor seal attempting to jump out of water onto thin ice. In both instances the seal breaks through the ice and returns to the refreshingly cold waters of the lagoon. #HarborSeal #Phocavitulina #Ice #Winter #Alaska #GlacierBay #Wildlife
