Today marks not only Columbus Day, but Indigenous Peoples Day, which recognizes and celebrates the history and resilience of the people who were already living here long before Columbus' voyage. National parks across the country preserve and share the stories, histories, heritage, and traditions of Indigenous peoples. Dating back thousands of years, Great Falls and its surrounding areas served as a major trading place for many indigenous tribes; especially the local Piscataway (present day Maryland) and Powhatan (present day Virginia), but also Iroquois (present day New York) would come to trade goods with local tribes.
