On September 14 1814, Fort McHenry faced one of its most testing and defining moments as it defended the city of Baltimore from the British Royal Navy during the
#Warof1812.
The citizens of Baltimore witnessed the struggle through the night as the defenders of the fort held their ground against a determined shower of bombs, mortars, and rockets. When the guns fell silent and the smoke cleared in the morning, the large Star-Spangled Banner was flown from the fort in an act of defiance and victory. From the
#BattleofBaltimore, the United States gained not only a sense of national pride but also an anthem.
Today, replicas of the fifteen stars and fifteen stripes flag which inspired the words to the 'Star-Spangled Banner' fly over the ramparts of Fort McHenry just as the original did in 1814.
