Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates an important step towards the end of slavery in the United States. It celebrates the date of June 19, 1865, when enslaved people of African descent located in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom. Designated on May 11, 1976, the Strand Historic District National Historic Landmark (NHL) in Galveston recognizes the area’s architectural and commercial significance to the port city during the second half of the nineteenth century. Located within the NHL district is the former site of the Osterman Building, where an official Texas Historical Marker dedicated in 2014 honors the celebration Juneteenth. The location was the former headquarters site of the Commanding Officer of the District of Texas, General Gordon Granger.
