Turtle power! While turtles are notoriously slow, under the sea, it’s a whole different story! The average green sea turtle clocks in at around 20 miles per hour at its fastest swim. Shell yeah! These turtles would definitely beat the hare in a water race, no questions asked! These beautiful and gentle creatures are best seen in the coastal waters, like this little one off the coast of Florida. Why so green? The green sea turtle’s carapace, or shell, is usually brown or olive. Their name comes from the greenish color of the fat beneath their skin, due to the algae and grasses they eat. No introverts here. Like other sea turtles, the green turtle cannot pull its head into its shell.
