Did you know 2022 marks the bicentennial of Frederick Law Olmsted? Born in 1822, Olmstead is recognized as the founder of American landscape architecture and the nation's foremost parkmaker. Olmsted moved his home to suburban Boston in 1883 and established the world's first full-scale professional office for the practice of landscape design. Olmsted is best known, along with colleague, Calvert Vaux, for designing the grounds of New York City's Central Park, as well as the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina and the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. During the next century, his sons and successors perpetuated Olmsted's design ideals, philosophy, and influence. The National Park Service acquired Olmsted's home and office (Fairsted) in 1979 and maintains many of the working records in the interest of understanding and preserving the special places this firm created.
