“So long, and thanks for all the fish!” Looks like the wind really raised the stakes. High winds might not be everyone's ideal camping weather, but they don't have to ruin your trip, either. Before any trip, make sure to check the weather forecast for the area where you'll be traveling. Sometimes you can’t avoid the elements. Oh a mighty winds a blowing! Set up your tent so the wind flows over and around by placing it so the narrow ends are facing into the unknown! Sorry, into the wind. Finally, avoid inserting stakes straight into the ground. Instead, push them inward towards the tent so they can better resist forces like wind, bears, Sasquatch (I want to believe!) trying to pull them out. In conclusion, be prepared. Tents are like toddlers, ya gotta keep an eye on ‘em. They move fast. Images: Airborne tent in the Pine Springs Campground at @guadalupemountainsnps during a gust of wind last spring. NPS/E.
