Manua District Ranger Fuiava Bert Fuiava uses a variety of technology to retrieve underwater instrumentation that helps Park managers and researchers at @npsamericansamoa assess coral reef health. The "watch" on Fuiava's right wrist is actually a small computer that gives him data on his dive time and depth which allows him to dive safely. The device he is breathing off of is called a closed circuit rebreather. These devices are different than conventional open circuit SCUBA in that all the air is recycled through a carbon dioxide scrubber so no bubbles are created. Rebreather technology also allows divers to maximize their time at depth by optimizing the partial pressure of oxygen breathed at different depths.
