Jump jump…You should know, you should know…
Prairie dog chatter is one of many interesting sounds you’ll hear at
@windcavenps. One of the black-tailed prairie dog’s most amusing calls is the jump-yip, in which they stand on the mound, throw their head back, and let out a high-pitched bark, sometimes evening toppling onto their backs due to the exertion. (Got up too fast. Happens to the best of us.) Hope no one was filming.
These yips usually occur when a predator leaves the area and the jump-yip signals “all-clear." Prairie dogs may also use the jump-yip call during territorial disputes, to call for Alan (only to find Steve) or to signal that a snake’s in their boot, wait…territory. Yeah, territory.
Have you witnessed a jump-yip before? Have do done your own jump-yip?
