I didn’t choose the spud life, the spud life chose me.
The floaty potato, a.k.a. manatee, is a large, fully aquatic mammal. Having a rather voluminous body shape, manatees aren’t exactly known for their speed and agility, but when needed, they can swim at speeds of 20 mph for small bursts. Not bad. Manatees are calm herbivores that spend most of their time eating, sleeping and traveling through slow rivers, canals, saltwater bays, estuaries and coastal areas. Where do we sign up?
Biscayne National Park is a great place to observe manatees, particularly in the cooler months when they tend to congregate in Florida’s warm coastal waters.
Wednesday marked Manatee Appreciation Day, a day dedicated to learning about these gentle giants. Don’t limit it to one day! Learn about these unique creatures all year long.
