When his twin brother moved to Bar Harbor and became all famous, George stayed behind and became the lesser of two weasels.
Short-tailed weasels, also known as stoats or ermines, are year-round residents in Acadia National Park, unless one heads to the big city. In the summer their coats are mostly brown, but right now they are a brilliant bright white (a black tip on the tail is kept year-round). Active all winter, the weasels are able blend in with the snowy landscape while they hunt mice, voles, and other small animals. This camouflage also helps keep them hidden from their own predators, which may include owls, hawks, foxes, and coyotes. The short-tailed weasel’s winter fur is not just for camouflage; it also grows thicker and warmer in preparation for the colder temperatures.
