Boo. At first glance, the dark, jagged island just offshore within Crater Lake calls to mind the image of a ghostly ship with tall masts and drooping sails. The Phantom Ship is actually a resistant remnant of an ancient volcanic cone that was engulfed in the growing Mazama volcano. Geologic studies outline that “The Phantom Ship” is one of the first volcanic features from Mt. Mazama's magma chamber. In essence, it is one of the oldest building blocks that led to the formation of Mt. Mazama. Image: The Phantom Ship, which looks like a ship traveling in the lake. It has Crater Lake's deep blue water with a reflection of the rock on the water. NPS/S. Duwe #FindYourPark #RecreateResponsibly #VolcanoWeek #craterlake #oregon
