Well, that’s a bit of a stretch. This golden-mantled ground squirrel at Cedar Breaks National Monument in Utah demonstrates an enthusiastic post-nap stretch. In winter, these mammals undergo torpor, a very deep sleep, to conserve energy and survive the bitter cold. Stretching increases flexibility and helps lengthen muscles to keep up mobility for all of us, even squirrels.
