Meanwhile…in Wisconsin Centuries of wave action, freezing, and thawing sculpted shorelines throughout Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, giving us some of the Great Lakes' most spectacular scenery. Nature has carved delicate arches, vaulted chambers, and honeycombed passageways into cliffs. During the winter, ice formations can be viewed from the Lakeshore Trail, which is a challenging hike of 4-6 miles round trip from Meyers Beach. Winter visitors need to be especially careful: Do not take chances if ice conditions are unstable. Sub-zero temperatures and bitter wind chills are common so warm clothing is a must. Walking on ice can be extremely slippery- wear sturdy boots to prevent slipping. Watch out for falling ice and rock in and around the cliffs and caves. Updated Conditions within the National Lakeshore can always be found at go.nps.gov/ApostleConditions Image: View of cliff ice and snow from the Lakeshore Trail at Apostle Islands, WI. NPS/S.
