"Feed me, Seymour…feed me!"
Who's a bit ‘hangry?' The California Pitcher Plant, or Darlingtonia californica, is no darling. Like a striking cobra, it rises from the swampy depths of bogs to lure unassuming prey to their slow death. Lured by the sweet smell of nectar, insects climb into the bulbous stalk of the plant hoping for a tasty treat. Insects become disoriented and confused from the plant’s transparent leaves and rarely escape their green tomb. Their bodies fall to their watery grave where acidic liquid at the base of the plant digests the insect feast. Efficient.
