Keep calm and carrion…
Why do turkey vultures sit with their wings held wide in the morning? While vulture yoga may come to mind, it's more about warming their bodies. Turkey vultures are one of the few birds that intentionally lower their body temperature a few degrees at night. It is thought that they do this to conserve energy, since they don't always have a reliable food source.
Like other vultures, the turkey vulture has a bald head. This is so that bits of carrion (dead meat) do not adhere to the skin as they would to feathers. At close range the naked red heads of the adult turkey vultures resemble those of turkeys, hence the name.
Alright, let’s end on something nicer. Turkey vultures use vomit as a way to protect themselves from predators. Some people believe they projectile vomit while others simply state that they cough up semi-digested food. In either case, if a vulture feels threatened, they vomit.
Have a good one.
