Believe it or snot!
Hellbender salamanders have a lot of weird aliases. Nicknames include snot otter, devil dog, mud-devil, mud dog, grampus, and Allegheny alligator. But don’t call it a mudpuppy. That’s a whole other species. Fun.
Adventure slime! Hellbenders are large, aquatic salamanders that can grow over two feet long and weigh more than four pounds. Late August kicks off their mating season, which extends into October. Currently, male Hellbenders are creating rock “nests” in which females will lay their eggs. The males will then fertilize and guard the nest until they hatch, in about two months.
I think I’ll stay in. Hellbenders are loyal to their rocks. An individual hellbender’s range is less than half a square mile, and the salamanders have been found under the exact same rocks year after year. Do your part in protecting Hellbenders, and other aquatic species in parks, by not moving or stacking rocks in streams.
