When someone says you should smile more often…⁣ ⁣ Fake smile? Maybe. The Hawaiian happyface spider (Theridion grallator) is endemic to the Hawaiian archipelago, and is only found on four of the islands: Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Maui, and Hawaiʻi. In Hawaiian, it’s called nananana makaki’i, which translates literally as face-painted spider. Why the happy face? Some theories say the markings deter or confuse predators. (Everything is fine!) The markings may also work as camouflage. The happyface spider lives beneath the leaves of plants (ʻōhiʻa, kōpiko, kāwaʻu) in wet forests at mid-elevations.⁣ ⁣ Image: I can’t fake another smile.
