If you didn’t know what happened on May 21, you might have assumed that the people gathered for a meeting one Sunday a few weeks back in Greenfield were going to discuss being on the route for the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.
But the topic for the 60 to 80 people gathered in an auditorium at Nodaway Valley High School on July 7 was disaster recovery for Greenfield, which was struck on the third Tuesday in May by an EF4 tornado 1,000 yards wide and packing winds up to 185 mph. It destroyed and damaged hundreds of homes in the southwest Iowa town of about 2,000 and left four people dead, with another fatality recorded near Corning.
Two months and two days after the tornado, Greenfield on Tuesday will serve as the Day 3 ragbrai meeting town, as first announced in April, with upward of 20,000 cyclists anticipated to stop for rest and refreshment and to connect with their support drivers on the scenic town square.
