One bison, two bison, three bison… 🦬⁣ ⁣ This week, a team of National Park Service interns with @mosaicsinscience_nps and @lhip_interns headed to Wind Cave National Park to participate in a bison survey and tour the cave as part of #LatinoConservationWeek. During the trip, they learned about the park’s extensive prairie landscape and its wildlife (especially bison and prairie dogs). They also learned about the cave’s discovery, exploration, and its significance as a spiritual place to many.⁣ ⁣ The group also helped the park’s wildlife biologist do a count of bison in the park. A regular count helps Wind Cave keep track of how fast the bison population is growing and can monitor the herd to make sure the animals, and their habitat, are protected and conserved for future generations. By the end of the count, between 110 to 130 bison, including 12 calves, were observed. The count was done from a safe distance.
