Picturesque Fort Washington sits on high ground overlooking the Potomac River and offers a grand view of Washington, D.C. and the Virginia shoreline. Built to defend the river approach to Washington, DC, Maryland’s Fort Washington has stood as silent sentry for over 200 years. As technologies advanced so did Fort Washington, from the brick and stone of the 19th century to the concrete and steel of the 20th century. Today, the expansive grounds of the present Fort Washington Park, with its extensive hiking/bicycle paths and river view, are a scenic venue for picnicking, fishing, and outdoor recreation. ⁣ ⁣ Image 1: Looking through the arched sally port (entrance) of Fort Washington.⁣ ⁣ Image 2: View of interior buildings of fort from upper ramparts with empty cannon tracks.⁣ ⁣ Image: View of a yellow brick house, built in 1921 for the fort's commander, atop a grassy hill.⁣ ⁣ #maryland #FortWashington #washingtondc #fortification #forts #historicpreservation @civilwardefensesofwashington
