Residents are rising against development that could erase the historically Black town of Eatonville, Florida. With the help of Booker T. Washington, town leaders established a school to educate the Black youth. Now, developers are planning to buy the school and gentrify the area. On Feb. 7, the town council could determine the fate of the massive development that, if approved, will reshape and – activists and historians fear – erase the legacy of Eatonville. Members of the community object to the land being used to change the balance of power in their community by pricing out community members from several hundred new housing units. Residents want to keep the land and use it in a way that would benefit the community. Click the #LinkInBio to support.
