"I paint with an intention for revolution…. I paint for enlightenment, to bring us closer to parting the darkness and opening up the way to our origins."⠀ ⠀ Today's Curator's Pick by Associate Curator Connie H. Choi honors artist, poet, Orisha leader, and former Studio Museum artist in residence LeRoy Clarke, who passed away last month at the age of eighty-two.⠀ ⠀ Clarke's painting "Now" (1970) depicts two triumphantly-raised fists, one clenching a broken chain, a reference to the African-American struggle for equality and the worldwide independence movement of countries under colonial rule. The image's message, as the title suggests, is just as relevant today as it was over fifty years ago.⠀ ⠀ View "Now" in the final days of "Black Refractions" at the Frye Art Museum.⠀ ⠀ — ⠀ LeRoy Clarke (b. 1938), "Now", 1970. Oil on canvas, 48 1/4 × 72 3/8 in. The Studio Museum in Harlem; gift of the artist 1972.8⠀ ⠀ #StudioMuseumCollection #StudioMuseum #PermanentCollection #CuratorsPick@fryeartm...
