A July 12 arrest of Berkeley Chess Club cofounder Jesse Sheehan has escalated tensions between Southside residents and university-contracted APEX Security Group guards, underscoring how hostility has taken hold in the Telegraph Avenue area since surveillance began. Sheehan was hospitalized after being shoved up against a wall by APEX Security Group guards and arrested by the Berkeley Police Department upon his release from the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center where he was treated for injuries sustained during the altercation. The four-minute video opens with a security guard accusing Sheehan of trespassing on private property marked by traffic cones.
