After trying six different makeup tutorials… The winged eyeliner is on point. The Cedar waxwings can be identified by its pale brown head with pointed crests and a black mask around its eyes that is edged by a thin, white line. They have brown or gray wings, pale yellow undersides, and dark colored wings with brilliant red or orange waxy tips. The name “waxwing” comes from the waxy red secretions found on the tips of the secondaries (inner flight feathers) of some birds. The exact function of these tips is not known, but they may help attract mates. These birds can be seen or heard year-round throughout Sleeping Bear Lakeshore. Often found on the forest edge, they feast on berries and insects and make a thin whistle call. Image: Closeup of a Cedar waxwing showing mask around eyes.
