Socrates died poisoned, Nietzsche died hallucinating, and Baggio died standing. The 1994 World Cup Final gave us one of the most iconic moments in the sport’s history. A climax worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster. Legend goes that in 1970, a 3-year-old Roberto Baggio saw his father cry at the hands of Brazil. King Pelé and company had just defeated Italy in the World Cup Final, and all he could say to console his distraught father was to promise him future glory. “I’ll win a World Cup for you someday,” he said. “I’ll beat Brazil.” On July 17th, 1994, Baggio would finally get his chance. He’d dragged the Azzurri to the final in God-like fashion. It was destiny. Even Pelé — the man who’d broken his father’s heart all those years ago — was there that day to introduce the great Whitney Houston. “Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be,” she sang in the opening ceremony. No doubt, Baggio heard those words echo through the tunnels at the Rose Bowl, and his mind flashed back...
