(Part 2 / 4) Makilina used to live in another community that already had a drilled well. But when her first husband died in 2013, Makilina remarried and moved with her new husband and their children to Chawa. The only issue was that Chawa did not have a well, and most people collected water from the nearby river. Makilina struggled to get used to this new arrangement. During the rainy season, water at the river was overflowing but filled with dirt and other pollutants coming from upstream. And during the dry season, the water was inconsistent and difficult to find. Makilina found herself waking up at 2am to go dig holes in the riverbed in order to find water, and then later in the afternoon going to do the same under the hot sun.
