This Women’s History Month we want to highlight the amazing work of Black Girls CODE!
blackgirlscode is a STEAM-azing organization that introduces young women of color to skills in computer programming and technology. Black Girls Code was founded by Kimberly Bryant. Originally set out to encourage her own daughter’s purists in STEM. Kimberly became increasingly frustrated as she found a majority of youth coding programs were dominated by young, white men. With further research she discovered the number of women and girls receiving degrees in computer engineering had fallen from 30% thirty years ago to 12% today, with less than 3% being women of color. Using her skills as an engineer herself, Kimberly founded this groundbreaking organization, dedicated to closing the opportunity gap and creating equitable representation in the tech industry for Black women and girls.
