Happy National Women Physicians Day! Today honors the path that female doctors have paved! This event in particular celebrates Elizabeth Blackwell’s 201st birthday! She was the first woman to receive a medical degree in the U.S. While we celebrate Dr. Blackwell’s birthday, we want to also take the time on this day to honor Dr.Rebecca Lee Crumpler. In 1864, Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler became the first Black female in the U.S. to receive a medical degree from the New England Female Medical College. Making her the first African-American woman to become a doctor of medicine in the U.S. While strides have been made, there are many obstacles that are still to be faced for both minority patients and providers. For example, according to a 2021 Forbes article “Today Black female doctors represent only 2% of physicians”.
