Becky Hammon is an assistant coach of the San Antonio Spurs, Sarah Thomas is an NFL referee and Jen Welter is a training camp and preseason coach for the Arizona Cardinals. Well, we can now add Jessica Mendoza to this list of women pioneers. Mendoza, who became the first woman to call an ESPN MLB game as an analyst on Aug. 24, is a pioneer both for women everywhere and for those who did not play baseball professionally. Mendoza hardly came without ballplaying credentials: She won an Olympic gold medal in Athens in 2004 as part of the U.S. women’s softball team, took home a silver from Beijing in 2008 and is regarded as one of the best players of all-time. “Male, female, it doesn’t matter,” ESPN analyst, John Kruk, said Monday in a telephone interview. “She’s as knowledgeable as anyone I’ve ever talked to about baseball.
