It was pouring rain then, so we sat in his kitchen and enjoyed his wines while discussing all things wine, philosophy, and Soave. In the Veneto region of northeast Italy, the Filippi family has produced wine at the highest part of the Soave appellation, Colli Scaligeri, since 1900. Run by Filippo Filippi, the operation has an organic, artisan focus, where the vision centers around wines that portray a sense of place. The ability to see terroir in the glass is the most compelling aspect of Filippo’s wines, a rarity in a region like Soave that has been heavily commercialized and lost a number of its character and terroir-driven wines.
