Franchetti “Passorosso” Etna Rosso 2016
Heat up your week with Passorosso! This week’s featured wine comes from the scorched slopes of Sicily’s Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. Get it for a curbside steal, $24!
Etna’s terroir is about as dynamic as it gets. A diverse range of mineral and lava collecting on its surface for millennia has left the volcano with a mosaic-like soil structure. For his Passorosso wine, Andrea Franchetti sources the native Nerello Mascalese grape from a handful of carefully chosen sites, or contrade, each delineated for their specific volcanic rock types and altitudes. This span of expressions of terroir comes together beautifully representing the mountain as well as Franchetti’s masterful touch. Nerello Mascalese’s energetic edge is captured here with high-toned yet juicy cherry, peppery-anise spice, and the quintessential smokey minerality found in the best of Etna wines.
