Today we welcomed our tanenbaumchat community back to school following a much-deserved mid-winter break. Of course, one group of Grade 10 students were marked absent, but rest assured, they have a very good excuse: They’re busy building a school in Kenya and learning about their ancestral roots. A few fun facts: (1) The ground that the school is being built upon started untouched. Collectively our students and staff dug out the trench, laid the concrete foundation and filled it with rock and sand to create the base of the structure. (2) The synagogue in Nairobi that our students and staff visited was built in 1904 by Jewish settlers who believed the Jewish state would be settled in what was then Uganda. The congregation still functions today.
