Abraham Lake, located in Alberta's David Thompson Country, is the largest reservoir in the province. It was created when the Bighorn Dam was built on the North Saskatchewan River in 1972. During the winter, a unique phenomenon occurs on the lake when methane gas bubbles from decomposing organic material or natural gas seepage get trapped in the ice. This creates beautiful patterns and effects in the ice, which are often captured on Instagram. The layers of methane ice bubbles can be seen as the ice gets thicker.
