Tis the season of ‘reef-safe’ sunscreen ☀️ But what does the term ‘reef-safe’ actually mean when the studies only show the effects of sunscreen on pieces of coral in a lab vs. the vast and dynamic nature of coral in the ocean? Read on. Until we know more, we can’t say which UV filters are truly 'reef safe' but given that oxybenzone and octinoxate are the ones raising the most environmental concerns (and have motivated sunscreen bans in Hawaii and the Virgin Islands) you may want to consider avoiding products that contain them. How To Proactively Protect: + Limit sunscreen use by putting children in rash guards vs. shorts. + Opt for zinc oxide as much as possible. + Avoid sunscreen sprays which require more often application. #skinowledge #reefsafe #sunscreen #reefsafesunscreen #reefsafesuncare
