Today is the 58th anniversary of the Watts Uprising, five days of rebellion in response to years of the White power structure’s failure to address police brutality, police misconduct, school segregation, and housing segregation. The uprising ended with 34 people dead and more than 1,000 people injured, most at the hands of law enforcement.
Seven years later, Stax Records hosted the Wattstax Music Festival at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to bring hope, healing, and music to the residents of Watts. Reverend Jesse Jackson kicked off the concert, leading the crowd in a chant: “I am somebody.”
