While many of today's American society look at Memorial Day weekend as a time to barbecue, travel, and participate in many different leisure activities, I would like to take a moment to remember what Memorial Day is really about.
Like many soldiers during WWII, my father carried and played a harmonica during his time in the European Theater. After his passing, I thought it a fitting tribute to learn to play the harmonica. So for fourteen years, I have quietly gone to two cemeteries to play taps on Memorial day. One holds the final resting place of my father. The other lies the grave of a fallen hero I never knew in life.
I am no longer able to do so in California. But I will find a way to honor them here in Colorado. So somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, I will continue this tradition. Take a moment , close your eyes and listen close. You can hear the somber sound of taps. It’s different than what you’ve heard before. It’s a harmonica.
