“You’ll never believe why this sea lion is terrorizing a black spotted puffer fish! 🐡
At Los Islotes sea lion colony in La Paz, Mexico, we witnessed a behavior unlike anything I have ever seen. Sea lions are like puppies and this one decided to play with a poor defenseless (and adorable) black guineafowl pufferfish. We watched for 30 minutes in horror as the sea lion hunted the puffer, pulled it up to the surface like a balloon, and let it escape back to the rocks at the bottom only to repeat the process of torturing the fish.
It has been reported that some mammals can get “high” from chewing pufferfish! When threatened, puffers release a chemical called tetrodotoxin which seems to alter the sea lions behavior. Tetrodotoxin is a serious chemical that can be more deadly than cyanide if humans ingest it! 💉
So what do you think of this sea lion’s behavior?”
