Truth will prevail, in the end.
After hearing the ICJ verdict today, it is despairing to say the least, that even after 112 days of killing, displacing, kidnapping, torturing, humiliating, and starving the Palestinian people, the ICJ could not muster the voice to speak the truth, to call what is happening a genocide and call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.
It goes without saying that the ICJ has failed to order Israel to halt military operations in Gaza, despite having the authority to do so.
Nevertheless, we still have hope.
The verdict has set several precedents, voted for almost unanimously by the court’s judges, that the struggle for Palestine can build upon. South Africa’s charge that Israel is committing genocide was deemed plausible and the ICJ has recognized many of South Africa’s claims. The court has also delivered a ruling calling on Israel to take all measures within its powers to “prevent genocide”.
