Katie Meyer’s Law was unanimously passed in the California State Assembly earlier this week, allowing it to take a step forward in its path to becoming a law. Meyer is believed to have taken her own life after receiving an email from Stanford informing her that she was facing a disciplinary charge stemming from an incident where she had allegedly spilled coffee on a student (witnesses allege that the coffee spill was an accident). The student was believed to have sexually assaulted one of Meyer’s teammates. The five page letter, which was sent six months after the complaint was first filed and on the last day before the University’s statute of limitations could have closed the case, explained that Katie’s degree was being placed on hold and threatened expulsion.
