It’s Latinx heritage month
And I want to talk about the complexities of Latinidad real quick!
First and foremost, being Latinx or of Hispanic origin is an “Ethnicity” so you can be any race and still be considered a Hispanic/ Latinx person. Latinidad is a term used to describe the collective experience of all Latinx people, taking into consideration differences in race, nationality, and culture.
Because the term encompasses ALL latinx populations and we live in such a capitalistic, racist, “you must conform to something” kinda society~ latinidad gets white washed by white and/or lighter skinned Latinx populations.
That being said, there are Afro-Latinx people who exist that can be mono racial or mixed race. I would be considered mixed Afro-Ecuadoriana because I identify as a female and I have African, European and indigenous South American roots.
