Sarah Losso, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, has been busy studying trilobite fossils kept at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology.
Her research sheds light on the soft undersides of trilobites, as well as what made it possible for these ancient arthropods to curl up their bodies for protection, which is called enrollment. The fossils Sarah and her team used in the study are more than 400 million years old.
“These fossils allowed us to compare trilobites with modern arthropods and see that there is really only one way to accomplish enrollment given the arthropod body plan,” she shared.
