Juneteenth // Some 155 years ago my great great grandfather, Shedrick White, was among the Union troops that were deployed to Texas to let my people know they had been liberated. A day of liberation, a reminder that despite adversities we are free. It always amazes me how America separates herself from the gruesome history of slavery. We act as if it wasn't yesterday. As if the wounds are not fresh. As if buildings built and inhabited by slaves don't still stand tall. This building held slaves and I pass it everyday. Everyday. Everyday I feel it's presence. I remember my people's struggle, my people's resilience, my people's fight. We are liberated and so we celebrate. We are liberated and thus we liberate just as Shedrick did.
