A global team of astronomers, led by Harvard scientists, have, for the first time, captured an image of a black hole.⠀ ⠀ This image, revealed today by researchers from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), is the result of a massive, years-long effort by dozens of researchers. The EHT focused on a pair of supermassive black holes: the one at the center of the Milky Way galaxy, known as Sagittarius A*, and a second that lies at the heart of an elliptical galaxy called M87.⠀ ⠀ This first-ever image of a black hole is destined for the shortlist of iconic images not only for what it can tell astronomers and physicists about how gravity and general relativity work under the most extreme conditions, but because it captures what EHT Director Sheperd Doeleman called “a one-way door from our universe.” ⠀ ⠀ “This is a real breakthrough,” said Doeleman. “We’re seeing something we never thought we could see.” ⠀ ⠀ #Harvard #BlackHole #EHTBlackHole
