This is a brilliantly written memoir (I only just found out what memoir meant and I ain’t ashamed of it haha) to his son. He tells a story of growing up black and poor in America and how his experiences shaped his perception of the world. .
As a father I found it interesting because Ta-Nehisi speaks of these experiences and how they made him the man he is today, also and more importantly to me how they contribute to the way he parents and what light he sheds the world in to his children
.
I always wonder to myself if I’m doing right by my son, am I projecting my fears and frustrations on to him, am I wrapping him up in cotton wool to protect him from this world we live in, am I advising him just enough so that he is equip with the tools needed to navigate the terrain on his wonderful journey through life.

Two things are certain. One is that you’ll never know until they grow into their own and take the reigns for themselves .
