Coaching Spotlight: Bill Prentice 1948-1951 (varsity) In 1948, Bill Prentice became the head coach of Bellarmine, following his graduation from scubroncos. At Santa Clara, he played as a fullback and linebacker under head coach Buck Shaw (who later became head coach of the San Francisco 49ers). During World War II, Prentice served with the Air Corps and also played two seasons of football with the highly-regarded Fourth Air Force eleven. At bellarminebells , Prentice won the Catholic Athletic League title in his opening season. In his four seasons, Prentice maintained a high win percentage with 26 wins, 11 losses, and 1 tie. He coached outstanding players such as Bill McPherson, Dick Pfaff, Jim Perracci, Austin Dowling, Bill Nolan, and Jim Donovan. He left Bellarmine in 1952 and he went on to run a successful insurance business in San Jose. He remained close with Bellarmine, and gave generously to many Catholic charities in the region.
